Abstract [en]

This project aims to develop cost-efficient automation solutions for material handling processes on assembly lines at Aurobay Technologies. The focus is on the future integration of the Gen 3 and Gen 4 engine assembly lines into a single line, which will increase the number of required variants.

The methodology used in the project was the Design Research Methodology (DRM), employing qualitative methods to gather data, including observations, informal interviews, and analysis of current assembly line operations. The material handling operations were analysed to identify space constraints and potential areas for improvement. Based on the gathered information, various proposals were presented and evaluated on feasibility, functionality, and cost-efficiency.

The proposals include a vertical carousel, an overhead conveyor system, a rail distribution system for hanging components, guided pallets and a robot arm. The evaluation showed that the vertical carousel and the overhead conveyor better suit the criteria. These two proposals can be combined to improve material flow, reduce operator movement, and leverage available space.

The study concludes that cost-efficient automation proposals can improve the material handling operations if supported by standardised packaging and simplified component preparation processes. The proposed concepts provide a foundation for future pilot implementations and further development.
