Sugar-sweetened beverages, socioeconomic factors, and obesity in adults : A structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Vetenskapliga artiklar söktes i databaserna Medline (EBSCO) och Web of science.

Abstract [en]

Introduction: The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has increased globally and has been identified as a contributing factor to obesity and health problems. Previous research shows that both SSB consumption and the prevalence of obesity vary across socioeconomic groups. Socioeconomic factors such as education, income, and living conditions may influence people’s health behaviours and opportunities to make healthy choices.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to examine how the relationship between sugarsweetened beverage consumption and obesity among adults varies across socioeconomic groups.

Method: The study was conducted as a structured literature review using an inductive approach. Scientific articles were searched in the databases Medline (EBSCO) and Web of Science. The included studies were quality assessed and analysed through thematic analysis, resulting in two main themes and four subthemes.

Results: The analysis generated two main themes: Socioeconomic factors influence the relationship between SSB consumption and obesity. The risk for obesity associated with SSB consumption varies across different socioeconomic groups. Individuals with lower education, lower income, and socioeconomic disadvantage were more likely to have a higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, higher BMI, and increased prevalence of obesity. Variations between groups and populations suggest that the relationship is influenced by several interacting factors.

Conclusion: The literature review demonstrates that socioeconomic factors and living conditions were important in the relationship between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and obesity among adults. The findings highlight the importance of public health interventions that consider socioeconomic differences and people’s opportunities to make healthy choices.
