Creativity techniques among novices : A study on brain-sketching and brainstorming (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A central part of the field of User Experience (UX) design is the creative process. The strategies, methods and philosophies used in the creation and development of new ideas spans a wide spectrum and have eventually been referred to as idea generation techniques. One of the most commonly used idea generation techniques is traditional brainstorming. However, following the development and broadening of UX design, this idea generation technique has been challenged and supplemented by alternative idea generation techniques. One such is brainsketching, which is based on completely different social premises than traditional brainstorming. This study aims to examine how group based work affects the effectiveness of brainstorming and brainsketching. This is examined through two different idea generation sessions, in which students at Högskolan i Skövde, in which students at the University of Skövde who are studying IT education with a design focus participate. The study finds that traditional brainstorming generates more original ideas with a wide variety and is suitable for the early stages ofthe design process, whereas brainsketching produces more structured and detailed ideas that are better suited for the later stages of the design process.
