Folklore and Cozy Games: Insights for Developing a Game

Abstract [en]

This study aims to give insight into how to utilize Swedish folklore in developing cozy games for the purpose of informing design decisions for Home Sweet Gnome, a currently in-development game at Elva Entertainment. Through a mixed-method approach involving a digital survey (n = 18) and interviews (n = 3), this thesis explores how potential future players view folklore, cozy games and form expectations for depictions. The study draws on the works of folklorists such as Tora Wall, Short et. al’s (2017) signifiers of cozy games, Herman’s (1999) concept of the story-world and Hoorn and Konijn’s (2003) emotional process. Findings indicate that participants view folklore as deeply culturally resonant and shapes expectations similarly to how genre conventions do. It is observed that interest in folklore and cozy games likely increases interest in Home Sweet Gnome. Ultimately, this thesis illustrates the tensions and opportunities in adapting cultural traditions within contemporary game design.
