Concept Development of the Internal feeding mechanism for a bar magazine (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis has been to develop a conceptual design proposal for a new bar feeder intended for CNC lathes (Computer numerical control), in collaboration with DMA Lidköping AB. The company is planning to expand its product portfolio in order to reach a broader customer base. While the current bar feeders are primarily aimed at large-scale industries, the ambition is now to also meet the needs of smaller industries and workshops by developing a more compact machine for bars under 1600 mm in length. This work represents the initial phase of the development process and focuses on exploring potential solutions for the machine's internal mechanism. The development work has been carried out using Nigel Cross’s design model as the primary methodology, complemented by elements from Systems Engineering. The chosen approach, with its flexible and iterative structure, has enabled continuous reassessment and refinement of conceptual solutions. The project has been divided into three phases: conceptual design, embodiment, and detailing. Through theoretical calculations, construction requirements were identified and design alternatives developed, ultimately resulting in a concept modeled in the CAD software Autodesk Inventor. In collaboration with DMA, an FMEA analysis (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) was conducted to identify both strengths and potential weaknesses of the proposed concept. The final result thereby serves as a foundation for the company’s continued product development.
