Video game development is, arguably, difficult. Sometimes, even more so if you are an independent developer. Independent video game developers, oftentimes, have small teams, and diving into research on how to make something more usable for their players may not beat the top of the priority list. This small study on independent video game developers in Skövde, Sweden, has focused on the potential assistance of gaining awareness of usability in icon design processes provided by a player-centered icon design. The player-centered icon design guide was developed based on icon design research, psychology, memory science and survey responses. The results of local independent video game developers reading the player-centered icon design guide trend towards them having awareness of usability as a factor when designing video game icons, but gaining new vocabularies with which to discuss issues in their design work.
