Auditors' attitude towards the potential of artificial intelligence to detect financial crimes (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Financial crime is considered a societal problem where the state loses around SEK 100 billion every year. Auditors have a central role in reviewing companies' accounts and ensuring that the financial reports are correct. However, auditors are not the ones who most often report financial crime and one reason may be that digitalization brings new, complex ways to commit financial crime. It is therefore central to keep up with developments as digitalization also brings new solutions for detection. At the same time, auditors have a low use of artificial intelligence despite its potential and the industry is characterized by a certain caution.
Purpose: This study describes auditors' views on the role that artificial intelligence can play in their potential to detect financial crime compared to current practice. Given that auditors as a professional group have a central role in detecting and preventing financial crime, this study also contributes to understanding how their attitudes can be shaped.
Theoretical framework: This section will be used to analyze the collected empirical data. Since the analysis aims to lead to a conclusion on the study's questions and purpose, the section explains relevant concepts and theory.
Method: The empirical material has been collected through a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews. The focus has been on interviewing auditors, with a total of 5 auditors interviewed.
Conclusion: The study's conclusion explains that auditors' attitudes towards artificial intelligence's potential to detect financial crimes are both varied and common. The vast majority see that the technology will be able to contribute to more efficient detection of crimes, but at the same time, attitudes towards how it can be thought to streamline work vary, as well as whether it can be to the advantage or disadvantage of the industry. In addition, auditors' attitudes are shaped by laws, standards and other similar organizations, which may provide an explanation for why auditors think the way they do.
