What influences the audit process : A qualitative study from the auditors perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Auditing plays a significant role in ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting in limited companies. While auditing contributes to reliable financial reporting, companies with no prior audit experience may face challenges such as information asymmetry and unrealistic expectations between auditor and client. Previous research has shown that factors such as non-audit services (NAS), client relationships, and company background can influence the audit process. However, there is limited understanding of how auditors adapt their working methods to manage the challenges that may arise during first-time audits.

The purpose of this study is to identify and understand the working methods applied by auditors and the challenges they face during first-time audits. The study is based on expectation gap theory and agency theory, which highlight differences in expectations between auditors and clients, as well as challenges related to information asymmetry. Agency theory is applied to explain how the auditor may need to adjust their working methods based on the relationship with the client, while expectation gap theory is used to identify discrepancies between what clients expect from the audit and what the auditor is actually responsible for according to auditing standards.

A qualitative method was applied through semi-structured interviews to gather insights from auditors working at different audit firms. Since the audit process is carried out in teams, all auditors involved in audit teams were interviewed to provide a comprehensive understanding. The study includes seven interviews with auditors of varying experience levels, roles and from different firms.

The results indicate that auditors adapt their working methods through increased planning, documentation, and communication. The study also shows that NAS and client relationships affect both the time required and the quality of the audit process. By identifying working methods and challenges, this study provides practical knowledge of how auditors can address potential obstacles and apply suitable working methods during first-time audits.
