Managers' awareness of employees' motivational factors : A quantitative study on the relationship between managers' insight and employees' perceived motivation (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Motivation is an essential aspect in employees' work. Previous studies have different views on what role the manager has to motivate the employees, and the meaning of the manager's knowledge about motivating factors of every individual. The study aims to study the relationship between manager's awareness of individual motivation factors and employees perceived motivation.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the significance of managers' awareness of individual motivating factors for employees' motivation. This is to clarify how managers' awareness of motivation factors can influence motivation at work.
Method: A quantitative method was applied where data was collected through survey with 126 respondents, of which 16 managers and 110 employees. Data has been analyzed with correlation and regression analyses through several steps to identify if there is a relation between managers' awareness of individual motivating factors and the employees' motivation.
Results: The results show that there is no relation between managers' awareness of individual motivation factors and the employees' motivation. This indicates that managers do not need to be aware of individual motivation factors for employees to be motivated at work. The results also show that there is a big variation in both how employees rank motivation factors, and the managers’ awareness of how employees rank these factors.
Conclusion: The study shows that managers' awareness of individual motivating factors does not have a significant impact on employees' motivation. Most employees perceive a high level of motivation, even though the manager has varying levels of awareness of individual motivation factors.
