Finding oneself in the new : A qualitative study on female partners of labor migrants and their experiences of social integration (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Migrating as a female partner of a labor migrant often means remaining in the shadow of the principal migrant’s establishment, which can lead to invisibility and specific integration challenges. This study aims to explore how female partners of labor migrants from the Middle East experience social integration in Sweden. Drawing on a social constructivist and interpretivist approach, the analysis examines participants’ experiences of cultural encounters, identity transformation, gender roles, and social belonging. The theoretical framework is based on social identity theory, acculturation theory, gender power theory, intersectionality, the theory of social representations, as well as the concepts of hybrididentity and the conditions of belonging. The study is based on five semi-structured, in-depth interviews with women from the Middle East who migrated to Sweden with their partners. Thematic analysis resulted in three mainthemes: (1) adaptation strategies in the migration context, (2) changing social identity and experiences of in-betweenness, and (3) shifting gender and family roles. The findings show that the women’s integration processes are shaped by both agency and vulnerability, recognition and marginalization. Their experiences reveal that social integration is not solely a matter of individual effort, but is also deeply influenced by societal structures, norms, and opportunities for recognition. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of women’s migration experiences and emphasizes the importance of viewing integration as a reciprocal process involving both the individual and society.
