Biträdande rektorer arbetar både inom kommunal skola och friskola. De har en betydande roll i skolan och arbetsuppgifterna innefattar till exempel pedagogiskt ledarskap, administration samt medarbetaransvar. I sin yrkesroll möter de ofta motstridiga förväntningar och krav vilket medför omfattande arbetsuppgifter som kan påverka deras arbetsbelastning. Syftet med studien är att undersöka och jämföra biträdande rektorers egna upplevelser och erfarenheter av arbetsuppgifter och arbetsbelastning i kommunal skola i jämförelse med friskola. Studien använder en kvalitativ metod baserad på semistrukturerade intervjuer med biträdande rektorer från båda utbildningsverksamheterna. Fokus ligger på att förstå hur den komplexa arbetsmiljön kan påverka de biträdande rektorernas arbete. Resultatet ska identifiera insikter som kan leda till framtida stödåtgärder utan att generalisera resultaten till en population.

Empirin visar att de biträdande rektorernas huvudsakliga arbetsuppgifter innebär att delta i möten med elever och vårdnadshavare, vikarieanskaffning, tjänsteplanering, schemaläggning samt medarbetarsamtal. Flera av de biträdande rektorerna upplever hög arbetsbelastning kopplat till elevers och medarbetares sjukfrånvaro och behov av anpassningar, ofta på grund av psykisk ohälsa. Faktorer som påverkar kontroll och belastning är oförutsedda händelser, krav och tidsbrist. Respondenterna beskriver vilka ytterligare funktioner och stöd som skulle kunna avlasta dem i arbetet. Analysen visar att de biträdande rektorerna i kommunala skolor och friskolor beskriver sina arbetsuppgifter likartat, men arbetsbelastningen skiljer sig. Skillnader som framkommer i den aktuella studien är att kommunal skola har fler direktiv från kommunalt håll att anpassa sig till, samt att de biträdande rektorerna i mindre friskolor kan ha kombinerad tjänst. De biträdande rektorernas arbetsbelastning kan påverkas av skolans storlek, skolformen de arbetar inom, tillgång till stöd och resurser, tidskrävande uppgifter samt av oförutsedda arbetsuppgifter. Slutsatsen blir därmed att arbetsuppgifterna till största del inte skiljer sig åt mellan utbildningsverksamheterna och att arbetsbelastningen påverkas av skolans storlek, skolformen, typ av arbetsuppgifter samt medarbetarnas och elevernas mående.

Assistant principals work in both municipal schools and independent schools. They have a significant role in school and their tasks include for example pedagogical leadership, administration and personnel responsibility. In their professional role, they often encounter conflicting expectations and demands that can affect their workload. The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare assistant principals’ own experiences and perceptions of tasks and workload in municipal schools versus independent schools. The study uses a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews with assistant principals from both types of educational institutions. The focus is on understanding how the complex work environment can affect the work of assistant principals. The results aim to identify insights that may inform future support measures, without generalizing the findings to a population. 

The empirical evidence shows that the main tasks of the assistant principals in this study involve participating in meetings with students and guardians, substitute recruitment, job planning, scheduling and performance review with employees. Several assistant principals experience high workload linked to students' and staff's sick leave and the need for adaptations, often due to mental ill health. Factors that affect control and workload are unforeseen events, demands and lack of time. The respondents describe which additional functions and support could ease their workload. The analysis shows that assistant principals in municipal and independent schools describe their tasks similarly, but the workload differs. Differences that emerge in the current study are that municipal schools have more directives from the municipality to adapt to, and the assistant principals in smaller independent schools may have combined service. The assistant principal’s workload can be affected by the size of the school, the type of school they work in, access to support and resources, time-consuming tasks and unforeseen tasks. The conclusion is therefore that the tasks do not differ for the most part between the educational institutions and that workload is affected by the size of the school, the type of school, the type of tasks and the well-being of the employees and students.
