When the world meets in the school corridors – school nurses’ experiences in meeting children and families with foreign backgrounds (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Migration is an integrated part of Swedish society, and today, over a quarter of primary school students have a foreign background. According to previous research, children and families with foreign backgrounds are at risk of experiencing ill health. The school nurse plays a central role in preventing this, as well as in promoting health and providing person-centered care.

Aim: To describe school nurses' experiences of meeting children and families with a foreign background.

Method: A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 16 school nurses with required specialist training in either district nursing, pediatric nursing, or school nursing. The collected material was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis.

Findings: The result of the analysis resulted in five categories with a theme indicating that school nurses promote health by building trust with children and families of foreign backgrounds. Communication challenges and culturally influenced health behaviors and lifestyles required the school nurses to work with empathy, curiosity, and without prejudice.

Conclusion: Person-centered care, cultural competence, and adapted communication are described as crucial factors for school nurses in their work with children and families of foreign background. The results of the analysis underscore the need for education and development of communication tools, as well as increased awareness of norms among school nurses, to further strengthen their ability to meet and support families of foreign background.
