AI and Auditors Intentions : A Qualitative Study Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Artificiell intelligens (AI) påverkar allt fler yrken, inklusive revision.

Abstract [en]

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly affecting various professions, including auditing. However, auditing is a field characterized by conservatism and caution toward technological change. Previous research has often focused on technical capabilities or organizational aspects, but there is a lack of studies that examine how auditors themselves perceive the use of AI in different phases of the audit process. This study aims to fill that gap.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how Swedish auditors perceive the use of AI in different phases of the audit process, and what reasoning underlies these perceptions. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence their intention to use AI.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews. A total of five auditors with varying levels of experience and from different audit firms were interviewed. The material was analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted through the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), focusing on attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control.

Results: The results show that auditors are generally positive toward using AI, particularly in the planning and fieldwork phases, where the technology is seen as a tool for streamlining data collection and analysis. In the reporting phase, attitudes are more cautious, mainly due to legal requirements and the personal responsibility placed on the auditor.

Conclusion: The study shows that AI is perceived as a valuable support tool, but not as a replacement for the auditor’s professional judgment. The intention to use AI is influenced by how the technology is perceived, the organizational norms, and the degree of perceived control over its use. TPB proved to be a useful framework for analyzing these factors.
