When business logic meets the world of professional practice : A quantitative study on the role of ownership structure in goal conflicts in Swedish animal healthcare (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The commercialization of Swedish animal healthcare has increased significantly over the past decade, raising questions about how professional autonomy is affected when financial objectives gain greater influence over organizational governance. This study aims to analyze the relationship between business logic, professional logic, and the goal conflicts that arise within this field of tension, particularly focusing on how these relationships vary depending on the ownership structure of veterinary clinics. Using institutional theory as the theoretical framework, a quantitative survey was conducted targeting operational staff within animal healthcare, resulting in 169 complete responses. Through correlation analyses, three hypotheses were tested concerning the relationships between business logic, professional logic, and perceived goal conflicts. The results show that a stronger presence of business logic correlates with reduced professional autonomy and an increased occurrence of perceived goal conflicts. These conflicts tend to be more pronounced in organizations with financially motivated ownership structures, such as large clinics that are a part of a corporate chain or private clinics owned by venture capital firms. The study demonstrates that ownership structure has some significance for how institutional logics are balanced in practice, and thus for the conditions of professional practice within animal healthcare.
