The transition from traditional to agile project management – A study on reducing time and budget overruns in construction projects : A qualitative study on how transitioning to agile project management can influence construction project outcomes and reduce time and budget overruns (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Problem: The construction industry is a vital sector that, despite its importance, is frequently affected by time and budget overruns. Traditional project management methods, such as the Waterfall model, have proven to be insufficient in complex and dynamic environments. At the same time, interest in agile methods, which are characterized by flexibility, iteration and collaboration has grown. However, there is a need for a deeper understanding of how the transition to agile project management affects the execution of construction projects.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine how a transition from traditional to agile project management can help prevent time and budget overruns in construction projects.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative research approach. Empirical data was collected through nine semi-structured interviews with individuals in leadership roles within two ongoing construction projects at the construction company NCC. The material was analyzed thematically.

Results: The study shows that transitioning to agile project management can lead to improved communication, increased flexibility and a more responsible work environment, which can prevent project deviations regarding time and budget. However, successful implementation requires a combination of transformational and transactional leadership, along with organizational support and clear structure, for the method to effectively be applied in the construction industry.
