The crazy world of cyber insurance: a structured literature review

Abstract [en]

Over the past 25 years, the use of cyber insurance has continued to grow, and so has the research. A structured literature review has been conducted to review what type of research exists for businesses that utilise cyber insurance, as well as insurers that offer cyber insurance. The aim has also been to identify which re-search gaps that exist. Three databases have been searched for existing research from the past 10 years, 2015 – 2025. A total of 41 sources were included in the analysis. Themes such as finance, frameworks, and policies were recognised from both perspectives. The result shows that the financial aspect is the most researched aspect for both perspectives, though from different standpoints. The insurer's perspective is more focused on pricing and premiums, and the business perspective is more focused on cyber insurance as an investment. Another aspect that is important for both perspectives is the policies and the ontology. The policies need to be understood by everyone, as they can give an incentive to improve cybersecurity. The methodology, results, and ethical & societal aspects of this master's project are discussed.
