Youth, social media and mental health – a structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Social media plays a central role in adolescents’ daily lives and affects their mental health in various ways. Research shows both health-promoting and health-inhibiting effects depending on usage patterns and individual conditions.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine how adolescents' experiences of social media affect their mental health.

Method: Four themes were identified: (1) Emotional well-being, (2) Social belonging and support, (3) Usage patterns and context, and (4) Social comparison and self-image. The findings show that social media can both support and challenge adolescents’ mental health. Factors such as self-esteem, usage motives, social support, and perceived meaningfulness of online interactions are crucial for understanding these effects.

Results: Four themes were identified: (1) Emotional well-being, (2) Social belonging and support, (3) Usage patterns and context, and (4) Social comparison and self-image. The findings show that social media can both support and challenge adolescents’ mental health. Factors such as self-esteem, usage motives, social support, and the perceived meaningfulness of online interactions are crucial for understanding these effects.

Conclusion: Adolescents’ experiences of social media are shaped by how, why, and in what context the platforms are used. Reflective usage, self-esteem, and social support are crucial for their mental well-being. The findings may inform public health initiatives aimed at strengthening youth mental health and digital resilience.
