Open source software adoption in organizations : Incentives, successfactors and challenges (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the adoption of open-source software in organizational settings, with a focus on identifying the main incentives, success factors, and challenges associated with this transition. Although OSS offers clear benefits such as cost savings, vendor independence, and increased transparency, its adoption remains limited, especially on desktop computers. To investigate this issue, a structured literature review was conducted, drawing on nineteen peer-reviewed studies that examine OSS adoption in both public and private organizations. The findings show that key incentives include the elimination of licensing fees, improved system flexibility, and alignment with open standards. Successful adoption is often supported by strategic planning, user training, and technical compatibility with existing infrastructure. Despite these advantages, many organizations face significant obstacles such as user resistance, uncertainties in cost estimation, and technical integration difficulties. Additionally, limited professional support and strategic misalignment can hinder long-term success. This study concludes that adopting OSS requires more than just technical readiness; it also demands a coordinated organizational effort that includes planning, communication, and sustained support throughout the transition process.
