Abstract [en]

55% of the world's population lives in a city. Rapid urbanization contributes to air pollution, inadequate green infrastructure, urban heat islands, and can contribute to increased social gaps. Many deaths occur annually due to heat-related mortality and air pollution. Urban green spaces and trees are a way to mitigate these deaths. In 2021, the 3-30-300 rule was introduced. The rule emphasizes the importance of urban green spaces and equal access to it. The 3-30-300 rule suggests that every citizen should be able to see at least three trees from their home, have at least 30% tree canopy cover in their neighbourhood, and live a maximum of 300 meters from a green space. Research shows that these components benefit in physical and mental health. This study focused on the 30% component in Skövde, which has adopted the 3-30-300 rule. Mapping in QGIS conducted of tree canopy cover in the neighbourhoods: the center, Dälderna, Havstena, Hentorp, Vasastaden and Östermalm. An analysis was performed in Excel, between tree canopy and socioeconomic data to identify possible correlations. The result exhibit that one third of districts in Skövde have at least 30% tree canopy cover. However, the tree canopy cover is unequally distributed between and within the districts. Dälderna have better socioeconomic conditions and the highest percentage of tree canopy cover (42%). Meanwhile, Östermalm have lower socioeconomic conditions and the lowest percentage of tree canopy cover (14%). In summary, there is a requirement for more trees in all districts to achieve the 3-30-300 rule, to contribute to shading, cleaner air, combat climate changes, decreased social gaps and to provide all the health benefits the trees bring.

Abstract [sv]

Under 2021 introducerades 3-30-300-regeln.
