Is Swedish psychiatric care culturally competent? : A qualitative interview study on nurses' experiences of caring for patients with different cultures in psychiatry (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In psychiatric care in Sweden, the incidence of patients from other cultures has increased as a result of increased global migration. Migration-related trauma and cultural differences can make these patients particularly vulnerable to mental illness and contribute to barriers to seeking care.

Aim: To explore nurses' experiences of caring for patients from different cultural and ethnic groups in Sweden within psychiatric care.

Method: A qualitative empirical interview study with an inductive approach, where semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection. The sample group consisted of 6 nurses with at least 2 years of professional experience in psychiatric care. The collected data was analyzed in accordance with Graneheim and Lundman's (2004) content analysis.

Findings: Participating nurses expressed feelings of uncertainty and frustration when assessing mental health in patients from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds due to a lack of training in cultural differences and communication barriers, which presented ethical and equity-related challenges.

Conclusion: There is an increased need for improved training, resources and management support at the organizational level to ensure culturally adapted and equitable psychiatric care.
