School nurses' experience of supporting students with acting out behavior : A qualitative survey (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The negative outcome of acting out behavior can affect students’ health, school performance, and social situation. School nurses' health promotion work is an important part of the collaboration needed to support students with acting out behavior. School nurses can support students by giving students the opportunity to reflect on their own circumstances and their unique situation.

Aim: To describe school nurses' experiences of supporting students with acting out behavior.

Method: A qualitative survey with 20 informants. The data analysis was conducted using qualitative content analysis, with an inductive approach.

Findings: The school nurses describe the importance of being available by being visible in school, through drop-in sessions, and by acting on incidents. The school nurses can support students through a good treatment and by dialogue and reflection on consequences, feelings, and thoughts, and also through collaboration with other professions. Lack of time is described as a challenge in supporting students with acting out behavior.

Conclusion: The main results of the study show that the availability of school nurses is central to support students. The factor that affects availability the most is lack of time. By involving students and parents and collaborating with other professions, school nurses have a good opportunity to support students with acting out behavior.
