Reaching out without hurting : Experiences of talking to parents about their child’s overweight in child healthcare (English)
Abstract [sv]

Data samlades in via intervjuer med tio barnhälsovårdssköterskor.

Abstract [en]

Background: Overweight in children is an increasing societal problem that affects both individuals' health and society at large. Child healthcare nurses meet almost all children up to the age of six in Sweden and have a responsibility to promote good health. Parents want support from child health nurses to cope with their child’s overweight.

Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe child healthcare nurses' experiences of talking to parents about their child’s overweight.

Method: A qualitative method with an inductive approach was used. Data was collected through interviews with ten child healthcare nurses. Collected data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis.

Findings: The analysis of the interviews resulted in two categories, The difficult talk and Need for patience and time, with three subcategories each.

Conclusion: To talk with parents about their child’s overweight is both difficult and important. Child healthcare nurses do their best to meet parents as unique individuals and adapt the talk to the person in front of them. Parents have different backgrounds and conditions, some of which, such as socioeconomic background, are difficult to influence.
