Social identity and youth criminality : A qualitative study on juvenile delinquency in medium sized Swedish cities (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Youth crime is a growing social problem that is most often linked to socioeconomic vulnerability and social factors. The purpose of the study is to investigate how former criminals and professionals perceive the connection between socioeconomic factors and young people's involvement in crime and the role criminal resources play. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on a total of ten semistructured interviews with five former criminal youth and five professionals in the areas of police, social workers, leisure activities and sheltered housing. A thematic analysis has been carried out using a social psychological approach. The results have been interpreted based on theories of stigma, social identity, strain theory, Burgess zone model and socioeconomic impact. The results show that socioeconomic vulnerability, stigmatization and lack of opportunity are central factors that drive young people towards crime. Criminal networks are considered to be the alternative route to resources and social affirmation. Professionals emphasize the importance of preventive work to counteract negative developments in society. The study provides a deeper understanding of young people´s path into crime and the importance of individual measures that can create a sustainable alternative for young people in vulnerable environments.
