Carnivore diet and longevity-associated pathways:: Effects on muscle and cardiovascular markers

Abstract [en]

The carnivore diet consists of animal-based foods and has gained attention for potential metabolic and therapeutic benefits. This study aims to investigate the current lack of empirical research on its effects on molecular aging markers and muscle adaptation. RNA was extracted from every participant and analyzed using qPCR, while blood samples were sent for biomarker analyses. Results indicated a non-significant trend toward weight loss, which could become significant with more participants. Loss in lean mass was observed primarily in sedentary participants, likely due to glycogen and water depletion rather than muscle catabolism, while one active participant lost fat and retained muscle. Significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, elevated ketone levels, and positive amino acid profiles were observed. Lipid markers showed mixed changes, and literature suggests that unprocessed meat may not negatively impact cardiovascular health. Inflammatory markers like CRP and homocysteine remained stable or even trended downward. Magnesium and amino acid levels showed trends that indicate improved physical performance. Creatinine levels remained within the normal range, suggesting no adverse renal effects. Gene expression analysis showed a downregulation of FOXO3 and SIRT1, which may suggest reduced cellular stress and better metabolic regulation. These findings support the carnivore diet's potential to improve health markers, although more extensive studies are warranted. In conclusion, a strict carnivore diet may lead to beneficial metabolic and cardiovascular adaptations without negatively impacting inflammation, kidney function, or muscle metabolism. This research challenges conventional dietary guidelines and encourages a more nuanced view of animal-based nutrition in human health.
