Visual expressions and toxicity in online games : A study on gamers perspective on toxic behaviour (English)
Abstract [en]

Toxic behavior in online games is created by players communicating with each other in a destructive way. The present study explores emotes as a potential factor to create the toxic environment seen in online video games. 30 Discord server communities with ties to three different online competitive games were contacted which yielded 32 participants that answered a questionnaire. Participants were in general positive towards emotes and did not believe they were mostly used in a toxic way. There were examples given of problematic emotes in the games and the potential of emotes being part of the toxicity problem persists. One game stood out to be much more positive towards emotes and seemed to be a bigger part in the game as a whole than the others. The results could not give a general idea of if emotes help create toxic behavior but does highlight reasons for further studies.
