Intimate partner violence : A qualitative study on social workers´ perspectives on men´s use of violence in intimate relationships (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine social workers´ perceptions of the social factors that contribute to men in heterosexual relationships use of intimate partner violence, as well as which interventions are considered important in efforts to counteract and reduce violent behaviour. The study is based on qualitative interviews conducted with professional social workers who have experience working with men who have perpetrated violence. The collected material has been analyzed inductively through thematic analysis and interpreted through social learning theory, attachment theory and masculinity theory. The results show that the respondents identify a range of concurrent social factors behind men´s use of violence, including a lack of security in childhood, destructive masculinity norms, and the influence from digital environments. Furthermore, the importance of early preventive efforts, parental support, and an increased focus on reducing the stigma associated with violence are emphasized. In conclusion, intimate partner violence should be understood as a complex interplay between individual and societal structures, which requires a comprehensive approach on both the micro and macro levels. The study contributes with deeper knowledge of social workers´ perspective and points to the need for further research on the impact of digitalization and contemporary norms on men´s views of violence, power and masculinity.
