Motivational study on the police profession : A quantitative study on how police officers´ personality and values influence their motivation for the profession (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sweden is currently a vulnerable society with a crime rate that has increased drastically in recent years. The rise in crime has led to a greater need for police officers, which in turn has created challenges for the Police Authority in establishing a sustainable working environment. The aim of the study is to examine how police officers’ personality traits and values influence their motivation for the profession. The study is based on the Five-Factor Model and Schwartz's Value Theory to explore how personality and values impact intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. A quantitative design was used, and with the help of questionnaires, the study collected responses from 115 police officers. The data were analyzed using factor analyses and simple regressions to assess the impact of individual personality traits and values on motivation for the police profession. The results showed that police officers with altruistic values had a positive correlation with intrinsic motivation, while those with egocentric values had a positive correlation with extrinsic motivation. Personality traits did not show any significant correlation with extrinsic motivation. Using value theory and the theory of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, the study was able to explain the relationship between police officers’ fundamental values and what motivates them in their professional lives.
