Sense of coherence and psychological wellbeing among university students : A comparison of distance and on campus learners (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Distance education has increased markedly in recent years, but it remains unclear how study mode affects students’ psychosocial well-being. Aim: The aim was to investigate how study mode (on-campus or distance) influences psychosocial factors among university students. Methods: A web-based questionnaire was completed by 44 students (25 on campus, 19 distance; 61% women). Indices for sense of belonging, social contact, access to resources, motivation, and stress management were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test; proportions were compared with the χ² test. Results: On-campus students reported a significantly higher sense of belonging, more frequent social contact, and better access to resources than distance students. No significant differences were found between the groups for self-rated motivation or stress management, although distance students reported slightly lower levels on both. Gender analyses revealed no significant differences in sense of belonging or stress management. Discussion: These findings suggest that the campus environment may promote students’ social contacts and sense of belonging. The lack of significant differences in motivation and stress management implies that these factors may be influenced by aspects other than study mode. The skewed gender distribution and small sample size limit the ability to detect gender differences and restrict generalizability. Further studies with larger and more diverse samples are needed.
