Adolescents’ mental health in the digital world : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Globally, it is estimated that 20% of young people have mental illness. Around half of mental illness debuts before the age of 15. Stress has increased, especially in girls but also in boys. School stress and digital media stress are two prominent reasons for young people's stress. Digital stress affects young people's mental health and can lead to mental illness which, if left untreated, can lead to future exclusion in society. The school nurse's work includes health visits with health dialogues and knowledge should be available to recognize signs of digital stress.

Aim: To describe adolescents’ experience of digital stress and the impact it has on mental health.

Method: An integrative literature review with an inductive approach. The analysis was performed using Friberg's method.

Findings: Four categories emerged: Negative consequences of digital stress, health-promoting factors of digital presence, gender differences, and protective factors that promote mental health in digital stress. Nine subcategories also emerged.

Conclusion: Digital stress has a largely negative effect. The impact of stress on mental health depends on the resilience of the youth. Resilience can be increased. The school nurse's work should be person-centered and based on the student's story. This allows interventions to be implemented at an early stage to prevent mental illness. Collaboration with others in student health and with teachers and parents is necessary.
