Abstract [sv]

Inledning: Sociala medier spelar en central roll i många tonårstjejers vardag och har visat sig påverka deras psykiska hälsa. Även om plattformar som Instagram, Snapchat och TikTok erbjuder utrymme för kreativitet och socialt utbyte, tyder forskning på att de också kan bidra till ökad psykisk ohälsa. Problem som ångest, depression, sömnsvårigheter och låg självkänsla är särskilt vanliga vid hög användning. Studien baseras på Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954; Guimond, 2006), som förklarar hur människor jämför sig med andra för att bedöma sitt egenvärde. På sociala medier sker dessa jämförelser ofta mot ouppnåeliga ideal. Metod: Studien är en litteraturöversikt där tio vetenskapliga artiklar granskades från 2019–2025 och analyserades tematiskt. Fokus låg på självkänsla, ångest, depression, sömnkvalitet och social jämförelse hos tonårstjejer. Resultat: Resultaten visar att sociala medier ofta påverkar det psykiska måendet negativt, särskilt genom social jämförelse, kroppsmissnöje och begreppet FOMO ”fear of missing out”, vilket kan bidra till ångest och sömnproblem. Flickor i socioekonomiskt utsatta grupper drabbas hårdare. Diskussion: I diskussionen lyfts både stödjande och skadliga aspekter av sociala medier. För att minska den psykiska belastningen krävs ökad medvetenhet om jämförelsens psykologiska mekanismer samt stärkta insatser för digital hälsolitteracitet bland unga.

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Social media plays a central role in the everyday lives of many teenage girls and has been shown to have an impact on their mental health. Although platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok offer space for creativity and social exchange, research suggests that they can also contribute to increased mental ill health. Problems such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems and low self-esteem are particularly common with high use. The study is based on Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954; Guimond, 2006), which explains how people compare themselves to others to assess their self-worth. On social media, these comparisons often take place against unattainable ideals. Method: The study is a literature review in which ten scientifically reviewed articles from 2019–2025 were analyzed thematically. The focus was on self-esteem, anxiety, depression, sleep quality and social comparison in teenage girls. Results: The results show that social media often negatively affects mental well-being, especially through social comparison, body dissatisfaction and the concept of FOMO "fear of missing out", which can contribute to anxiety and sleep problems. Girls in socio-economically disadvantaged groups are hit harder. Discussion: The discussion highlights both supportive and harmful aspects of social media. In order to reduce the psychological burden, increased awareness of the psychological mechanisms of comparison and strengthened efforts for digital health literacy among young people are required.
