The feel of gunplay in shooter games is a central aspect of the experience, but actionable information on how to approach the development of this area of a game can be difficult for developers to find. This study combines a literature review of existing academic and industry insights with 10 semi-structured interviews with developers who have experience with creating gun feel. The interview resulted in a grounded theory on gun feel, consisting of 4 categories, including Visual, Auditory & Kinetic Feedback, Animation Systems, Aesthetic Considerations and Contextual Integration. The results from the interviews were then compared to the background research which allowed for a rich yet non-exhaustive description of the area of gun feel to be established. Some limitations of the work include a relatively small sample size, no insight into the area of audio and a skew towards independent studios and tactical shooters.
