Relatives' perspectives on intimate partner violence : Health implications and codependency : A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study explores the experiences of individuals who are close to someone exposed to domestic violence, with a particular focus on how these experiences affect their health. The aim is to analyze how the violence impacts the psychological and physical health of close relatives, and to examine how codependency may develop in such contexts. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with ten individuals who have had close relationships with victims of domestic violence. The empirical material was analyzed using a deductive thematic analysis. Theoretical perspectives have been used to interpret the material: codependency, the relative perspective, ecological model and cognitive dissonance as well as the dramaturgical perspective The findings show that relatives often experience a strong sense of powerlessness, emotional exhaustion, and physical stress reactions. Several participants described slipping into a helper role that became identity-forming and contributed to self-sacrifice and codependent behavior. The study also highlights a lack of tailored support for relatives, which further exacerbates their vulnerability. The results may inform the development of targeted support interventions that address the specific emotional and health-related needs of those close to individuals exposed to domestic abuse.
