Nicotine use among students : A social and psychological strategy for stress management and performance (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In today's society, nicotine has been shown to be a factor in students reacting and acting differently in terms of health and performance compared to students who do not use it, mainly when it comes to the trendy white snus. The product has increased in use in recent years due to students' satisfaction that white snus can be seen as a healthier alternative compared to other tobacco products, while their craving for nicotine and taste has been shown to be a reason to continue using especially snus. The purpose of this study is to investigate students' experiences of nicotine use in the school environment, especially in relation to social interactions, stress management and academic performance. Using a qualitative study with an inductive method of 10 semi-structured interviews with university students who use nicotine, the study has been analyzed with three different theories; Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior and coping strategies. A thematic analysis within the study provided deeper insight into how nicotine use affects central aspects of social factors, student culture, and shaped identities. It was found that nicotine affects students' academic benefits, performance, self-image, perspectives on nicotine as a coping benefit, and rationalization of its health risks.
