Support that makes a difference : A structured literature review on social connectedness and involuntary loneliness among older LGBTQI+ individuals (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Involuntary loneliness is a public health issue in which older LGBTQI+ individuals represent a particularly vulnerable group. Although social connectedness functions as a protective factor against involuntary loneliness, older LGBTQI+ individuals often face limited access to community resources. This highlights a need to explore support that can promote social connectedness and counteract involuntary loneliness within this group.

Aim: To examine support that promotes social connectedness and counters involuntary loneliness among older LGBTQI+ individuals through a structured literature review.

Method: The study was conducted as a structured literature review based on twenty scientific articles retrieved from the databases Scopus and Web of Science. The collected material was analysed using thematic analysis.

Results: Two main themes and four subthemes emerged: social relationships including family and friendship support and community support, and arenas, comprising physical arenas and technology-mediated arenas. The findings indicate that personal relationships and access to safe, inclusive spaces can reduce loneliness and foster social connectedness among older LGBTQI+ individuals, while barriers such as geographical isolation, ageism, heterosexism and digital exclusion hinder access to supportive environments.

Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of social relationships and inclusive, supportive arenas in reducing involuntary loneliness among older LGBTQI+ individuals. Barriers to access remain, underscoring the need for tailored and accessible support resources. Future research should further explore these supports, include underrepresented groups, and examine how such support can be implemented in Swedish public health practice.
