The interaction between social media and young people's experiences of loneliness : A structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: The rapid development of digital technology and social media has had a profound impact on society, transforming communication patterns and creating new social arenas. Digital communication often lacks the emotional closeness that physical interactions provide, which can lead to more superficial relationships and an increased sense of loneliness.

Aim: The aim of this structured literature review was to explore how social media and digital platforms interact with young people's feelings of loneliness.

Method: The study employed a structured literature review based on 21 scientific original articles. These articles were analyzed using a thematic analysis method to identify key patterns and themes within the research field.

Results: The analysis resulted in three main themes: internet usage, online platforms, and individual factors. Within the theme of online platforms, two sub-themes emerged: social media and communication apps. The theme of individual factors was divided into mental health and demographic aspects.

Conclusion: The study shows a clear link between problematic social media use and young people's experience of loneliness. Increased digital presence, particularly through passive consumption and social comparison on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, can reinforce feelings of social isolation. However, communication applications have demonstrated a positive impact by fostering meaningful interactions and strengthening the sense of belonging.
