Support for new parents : Child health nurses' experiences of providing breastfeeding support – A survey study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Breastfeeding has well-documented health benefits for both mother and child, but breastfeeding frequency has decreased in Sweden and globally. The child health nurse has a central role in supporting and promoting breastfeeding within their work at BVC.

Aim: To investigate the challenges and opportunities that child health nurses face in their work with providing breastfeeding support.

Method: An exploratory cross-sectional study with qualitative elements was conducted with a self-constructed questionnaire that was distributed via email to child health nurses in different regions of Sweden. The study included both quantitative questions and open-ended free text responses. The questionnaire was answered in total by 38 out of 60. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive and comparative statistics, including Mann-Whitney U tests. The free text responses were analyzed thematically.

Results: Many felt that specialist training had not sufficiently prepared them to provide breastfeeding support, and that there is a great need for further training. Lack of resources, lack of time and an unsuitable physical environment emerged as organizational obstacles. At the same time, the nurses showed great commitment to improving support.

Conclusion: Improved training and organizational conditions are required to strengthen the role of the child health nurses in breastfeeding support. The study can contribute to quality development in child health care.
