Acculturation and cultural identity : A qualitative study of experiences among Swedish seniors living in Spain (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Spain is today one of the most popular countries for Swedes to settle in. The climate, nature, food and proximity to Sweden, as well as Swedish organizations on site, make Spain particularly attractive to Swedish seniors. The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding of Swedish seniors' experiences of the acculturation process when permanently moving to Spain and experiences of how their cultural identity changes in the encounter with a new culture. Through a qualitative study, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with Swedes permanently residing in Spain, aged 65–85. The results were analyzed using the study's theoretical framework: Culture, Cultural Identity Theory and Acculturation Theory. Through a thematic analysis from a hermeneutic epistemological perspective, the results showed that the majority of respondents feel integrated in Spain. Aspects identified in the study as important for integration are knowledge of the Spanish language, socializing with people from Spain and adapting new traditions. Many seniors also feel a strong sense of belonging to Spain. Some experience segregation, especially with limited language learning and preservation of Swedish traditions. The result also indicates that senior Swedes who have settled in Spain experience that their cultural identity has undergone changes, especially when it comes to language, traditions and social networks.
