Clinical psychologists’ experiences of emotional labor and its impact on well-being in Swedish psychiatry (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Clinical psychologists play a central role in ensuring good mental health care, especially in psychiatry where the need for care is great, while they themselves deal with significant emotional challenges. Despite the professional competence among practitioners, high rates of sick leave are reported within this professional group, which highlights a serious societal problem. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate how clinical psychologists within Swedish psychiatry experience and are perceived to be affected by the emotional demands placed on them, and to investigate how they manage these demands in their professional practice. Through a qualitative study, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted with clinical psychologists from child and adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. The interviews were analyzed through a thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes. The results showed that experiences of emotional labor varied depending on the type of emotional demand, individual factors and the context of the work. We also found that the most common strategies that psychologists used to cope with professional demands included organizational support, self-care and professional background. The study has practical relevance for both psychologists and their employers who want to promote a sustainable working life within psychiatry.
