I en tid där vi alla är ständigt uppkopplade, har sociala medier blivit en av de mest inflytelserika plattformarna för att forma normer i vår moderna värld. Plattformar som Instagram och Facebook fungerar inte bara som kommunikationsverktyg, utan de förstärker även ungdoms-och skönhetsideal. Tyvärr är oftast dessa ideal väldigt snäva, kommersialiserade och djupt rotade i åldersnormer, vilket skapar en exkludering för äldre kroppar och identiteter. Samtidigt ser vi att medelålders kvinnor blir en allt större grupp på sociala medier, men deras perspektiv får fortfarande inte den uppmärksamhet som de förtjänar i forskningen. I denna studie genomförde jag fem semistrukturerade intervjuer på fem medelålders kvinnor. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur dessa medelålders kvinnor påverkas av rådande ungdoms-och skönhetsideal som sprids på sociala medier, samt hur idealen kan ha påverkat deras identitet och självbild. Med en socialpsykologisk ansats studerades detta genom teorier och begrepp om roll, rolldistans, intrycksstyrning, främre och bakre rummet, sociala normer, identitet, performativitet och sociala jämförelseteorin. Fem semistrukturerade intervjuer på medelålders kvinnor genomfördes. Resultatet visade att kvinnorna påverkades olika av ungdoms-och skönhetsidealen på sociala medier. Vissa upplevde en osäkerhet och valde därför att anpassa sig till skönhetsnormerna, medan andra uttryckte ett motstånd och ifrågasatte istället idealen.

Abstract [en]

In an era where people are constantly connected online, social media has become one of the largest platforms for shaping norms in our time. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook not only function as communication tools, but they also reinforce various youth and beauty ideals. These ideals are often narrow, commercialized and deeply age-normative, which creates an exclusion for older bodies and identities. At the same time, we see that middle-aged women constitute a growing group of users on social media, but their perspectives are still subordinated in research. In this study I conducted five semi-structured interviews with five middle-aged women. The purpose of the study was to investigate how these middle-aged women are affected by prevailing youth and beauty ideals spread on social media, and how the ideals may have affected their identity and self-image. Using a social psychological approach, this was studied through theories and concepts of role, role distance, impression management, front and back space, social norms, identity, performativity and social comparison theory. Five semi-structured interviews with middle-aged women were conducted. The results showed that the women were affected differently by the youth and beauty ideal on social media. Some experienced uncertainty and therefore chose to adapt to the beauty norms, while others expressed resistance and instead questioned the ideals.
