”But what I'm saying is that men should also get a little focus.” : A qualitative study on young men's attitudes and stereotypes about equality and gender (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

It has been over 100 years since women gained the right to vote on the same terms as men, yet structural differences between the sexes remain in Sweden. This creates significant differences in living conditions between men and women. Previous research has shown that young men experience increased gender equality as a threat to their rights. The purpose of the study was to use ten semi-structured interviews to examine men aged 18–29 and their attitudes and stereotypes around gender equality and gender, as well as how these are formed. The results were analyzed based on theories of attitudes, stereotypes, attribution theory and social perception. The results showed that young men have positive attitudes towards gender equality, but that there are difficulties in relating to the concept of gender and its meaning. Their knowledge of gender equality and gender is not fully established, and the majority shows no major interest in learning more about the subject. Furthermore, it emerged that their attitudes and stereotypes are based on their social context, where the family plays a major role. These results can contribute to further research into the family's influence on attitudes towards equality and gender, and provide society with tools to arouse interest in equality issues among boys and men with the aim of preventing structural societal problems.
