Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Amning rekommenderas av WHO och Socialstyrelsen men amningsfrekvensen sjunker i Sverige. Amning är komplext och innefattar både emotionella och fysiologiska aspekter som sjuksköterskor inom barnhälsovård (BHV-sjuksköterskor) har nytta av att känna till för att kunna ge god omvårdnad som främjar hälsa och lindrar lidande. BHV-sjuksköterskor kan stödja amning genom vårdande samtal och personcentrerad vård.

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva BHV-sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att stödja amning hos mödrar som visar osäkerhet eller ovilja till amning.

Metod: För att besvara syftet valdes en kvalitativ ansats. Datainsamlingen genomfördes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. Urvalet var fjorton BHV-sjuksköterskor med olika erfarenheter av amningsstöd. Data analyserades genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys.

Resultat: I resultatet framkom temat “Att gå balansgång i ett hav av känslor”, två kategorier “Möta och hantera känslor” och “Se människan bakom känslorna” samt sju subkategorier. BHV-sjuksköterskorna beskrev en utmaning i att medvetandegöra sina egna känslor, möta mödrarnas känslor samt att våga ha svåra samtal. Även vikten av att möta föräldrar, skapa en trygg plats samt att vårda relationer betonades.

Konklusion: Studien visade att BHV-sjuksköterskor erfar amning som ett känsligt ämne som kräver mod att samtala om. Amning kan inte främjas till vilket pris som helst men stöd behöver ges i både med- och motgångar.

Abstract [en]

Background: Breastfeeding is recommended by the WHO but breastfeeding rates are declining in Sweden. Breastfeeding is complex and includes both emotional and physiological aspects that child-healthcare-nurses benefit from knowing, in order to provide good care. Child-healthcare-nurses can support breastfeeding through nurturing conversations and person-centered care.

Aim: The aim was to describe the experience of child-health-nurses in promoting breastfeeding among mothers who express uncertainty or unwillingness to breastfeed.

Method: To answer the purpose, a qualitative approach was chosen. The sample was fourteen child-healthcare-nurses with different experiences. Datacollection was carried out through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis.

Findings: The results revealed the theme “Balancing in a sea of emotions”, two categories “Meeting and managing emotions” and “Seeing the person behind the emotions” and seven subcategories. Child-healthcare-nurses described a challenge in becoming aware of their own emotions, meeting the mothers’ emotions and daring to have difficult conversations. The importance of meeting parents, creating a safe place and nurturing relationships was emphasized.

Conclusion: The study showed that child-healthcare-nurses experienced breastfeeding as a sensitive topic that requires courage to talk about. Breastfeeding cannot be promoted at any price but support needs to be given in both good and bad times.
