Coping strategies after traumatic events : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Anesthesia and intensive care nurses work in an environment where they are at risk of exposure to traumatic events. To cope with the emotional impact of such experiences and maintain a sustainable professional life, effective coping strategies are required.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore anesthesia and intensive care nurses’ experiences of coping after traumatic events in relation to patient care.

Method: A qualitative method was used in the study. Data collection was conducted through ten semi-structured interviews with anesthesia and intensive care nurses. The study was analyzed using thematic analysis with an inductive approach.

Findings: The analysis process resulted in three main themes: individual coping strategies, collegial and organizational support, and limitations in the current system, with a total of eight subthemes.

Conclusion: The findings showed that anesthesia and intensive care nurses use self-reflection, acceptance, positive reappraisal, learning and emotional distancing to manage and process traumatic events. Experience and collegial support emerged as the most significant factors in developing healthy and effective coping strategies.
