How does nursing home care affect the quality of life and mental health of older adults? : A qualitative literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The quality of life in elderly individuals living in nursing homes is often influenced by multiple factors. Emotional health, social relationships, and a sense of coherence all play key roles in determining their quality of life.

Aim: This literature review examines the impact of residential care facilities on the quality of life and mental health of older adults.

Method: The study is a review of 12 qualitative articles from the CINAHL and PubMed databases. A qualitative approach was considered suitable as it captures emotions and experiences, which aligns with the purpose of the review. Articles were analyzed to extract findings.

Findings: Nursing homes impact the mental health and quality of life of older adults. Loneliness leads to worry, anxiety, and a sense of meaninglessness. A positive environment, meaningful activities, and strong relationships promote well-being, reduce isolation, and have a positive effect on quality of life.

Conclusion: Loneliness, loss of relationships, and the living environment are factors that affect elderly individuals in nursing homes. Social interactions and activities can improve quality of life. Social bonds and support from staff increase security and comfort. Care should focus on both physical needs and mental well-being.
