“As a relative, you are living dead” : An empirical survey study about Anorexia Nervosa (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Anorexia Nervosa is a psychiatric condition classified as an eating disorder. It can lead to serious psychological and physical consequences and mainly affects children in their teens and young adults. Being a relative of a person with Anorexia Nervosa indirectly leads to becoming an informal caregiver with a large nursing responsibility.

Aim: The aim was to investigate relatives' experience of health care when their loved one is diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa.

Method: An empirical survey study with a qualitative discriptive design, where the aim was answered with qualitative discription content analysis.

Findings: Findings are presented in six categories: demographic data, to have a functional everyday life, the lack of education, leaving your loved one in compulsory care, life on pause and the care should look after relatives.

Conclusion: Relatives experienced shortages in areas in the form of sensitivity, family support and training among staff and relatives to manage everyday life. Relative’s felt excluded from the care of their loved one, as the focus was entirely on the person with Anorexia Nervosa. Relatives are exposed to worry, stress and anxiety as a result of having become an informal caregiver for their loved one, which led to them being affected by mental and physical ill health. The informal caregivers themselves become patients in care. Relatives also stated positive aspects of the care, which are unfortunately overshadowed by the negative experiences.
