This study explores the dynamics of cooperative interaction between experienced and novice players in cooperative gameplay, focusing on how these dynamics influence player enjoyment. Using qualitative methods within the online cooperative sandbox game Valheim (Iron Gate AB, 2021), the research aims to bridge the gap between players of varying experience levels. The study employs screening questionnaires, individual interviews, and group discussions to examine how experience levels affect enjoyment and cooperation during gameplay. By analysing feedback from experienced and novice players, the research reveals that enjoyment in cooperative open-world games is significantly affected by the balance between player autonomy and collaborative teamwork. These findings offer valuable insights for game developers seeking to enhance player experiences and foster a cohesive gaming community, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of cooperative gameplay dynamics in sandbox environments.
