Living with heart failure – A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden, approximately 250,000 – 300,000 people have heart failure. A disease which means that the heart's pumping ability is impaired. The disease causes symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath and edema that affect the individual's everyday life, which can lead to suffering. In order for the patient to be able to influence their care, it is important to take into account the patient's own stories and experiences ofthe disease. As a nurse, the patient needs to be seen based on the individual patient's lifecontext.

Aim: To describe patients' experience of living with heart failure in everyday life.

Method: An integrative compilation of qualitative research inspired by metasynthesis, based on ten qualitative articles.

Findings: In the analysis, four themes emerged: When the body gives up, reflection on illness and death, social interactions and challenge and adaptation. Following these themes, nine sub-themes were identified.

Conclusion: Heartfailure affects both the individual and relationships with loved ones, which can lead to suffering for the patient. Through an improved understanding of the patients' experience, the nurse can improve and adapt the care for the individual.
