Telehealth in primary care (PC) in low- and middle-income countries currently : A structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic led to major changes in primary care in the world, such as the use of digital health support during the health crisis where social distancing was required. However, in this scenario, access to health services was considered insufficient, which means that primary health care did not function as expected, and thus affected the continuity of care in several countries, mainly in low- and middle-income countries.
Aim: was to investigate telehealth in primary care in low- and middle-income countries today.
Method: was a structured literature study with an inductive approach based on two scientific databases (Pubmed, Cinahl) of original articles that were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method.
Results: Ten original articles resulted in two themes: digital assistance for healthcare professionals and patients and challenges in the use/implementation of telehealth. The first theme was divided into two sub-themes: self-care and working with digital tools. Telehealth has contributed to improving people's quality of life by preventing/treating health problems in primary care, improving access to care in remote areas being a tool for training healthcare professionals, and facilitating communication between organizations, healthcare professionals, and patients. However, social, economic, political, cultural, and technical challenges point to the need to rethink the offer and the possibility of accessing telehealth for healthcare professionals and patients in primary care in low- and middle-income countries today.
Conclusion: Telehealth services provide support and the opportunity for the patient to participate in their care remotely. It also promotes ongoing education, and qualification of healthcare professionals and facilitates communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Effective care using digital tools cannot grow without taking into account circumstances that affect its use and implementation.
