Abstract [en]

This research explores player experience in the serious game SamDays, which aims to raise awareness of anxiety disorders. Utilizing Costikyan’s theory of uncertainty, the study investigates how different sources of uncertainty within the game influence player engagement and understanding of the game’s themes. Through semi-structured interviews with participants, qualitative data were collected to gain insights into their experiences and perceptions of the game design. The findings reveal the importance of balancing simplicity and uncertainty in game mechanics to enhance player engagement and empathy toward individuals with anxiety. This research contributes to the broader conversation on serious games, emphasizing their potential as effective educational tools in promoting mental health awareness. Additionally, the study identifies limitations, such as the small sample size, and suggests future research directions, including the need for larger studies and the exploration of diverse player perspectives to enrich the understanding of player experiences in serious games.
