Adherence to self-care advice in diabetes type 2 : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes type 2 is a growing disease in the world. In type 2 diabetes, the patient's ability to self-care is a fundamental factor. The nurse's role is to support the patient and provide him or her with knowledge about diabetes type 2. E-health can be a support and a supplement for the patient in their self-care.

Aim: To illustrate nurses’ experiences of adherence to self-care advice in diabetes type 2 patients.

Method: A qualitative literature-based study of previous research. A total of 12 articles were analyzed.

Findings: Two main themes and three sub-themes emerged; The importance of professional support, the nurse’s knowledge, digitalization, the importance of social support and personal barriers to compliance.

Conclusion: Adherence to self-care in type 2 diabetes can be a challenge. Both patients and nurses need more knowledge about type 2 diabetes. The lack of knowledge can be an obstacle to patient compliance.
