The transition from K2 to K3 from the perspectives of auditors and accounting consultants (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

The transition from K2 to K3 involves increased requirements regarding competence and resources. K3 is a more complex and principles-based accounting framework that provides a fairer representation of a company’s financial position. The transition from K2 to K3 also entails increased demands for appropriate competence, time and resources. K2 is recommended for smaller companies, as it is a rules-based accounting framework that reduces the risk of future challenges requiring adjustments.

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to describe how auditors and accounting consultants experience the transition from K2 to K3. Particular focus is placed on driving factors and practical challenges. The most complex parts of the process are also highlighted in the study.

Theoretical Framework

The study is based on previous research regarding the transition from a rules-based to a principles-based accounting framework.

Method

A qualitative method has been applied in which semi-structured interviews have been conducted with both accounting consultants and auditors.

Conclusion

The study’s conclusion show that the transition from K2 to K3 is driven by legal requirements, but also by professional norms in voluntary transitions. There is no standardized model for the transition process itself, however, recurring phases emerge during transitions. These phases show that recalculation and opening balances are central elements. The transition can become complex and resource demanding. The study has identified challenges related to time consumption, competence, communication and financial aspects. Early planning, appropriate competence and clear communication are key factors for a successful transition.
